Wherever you are going to buy a monitor, there’s a lot of things that you might have to consider because most of the users don’t buy monitors to switch for another fast as they switch hardware parts like graphics cards, RAMs. Contrast ratios, pixel response times, refresh rates and many more things to are out there but one of the common things that you might miss is that all these factors depend on the panel type of your display. IPS, TN and VA are the most common types that can be seen on the market but how it’s possible to know which one is the best when comparing IPS vs TN vs VA?
Each of these types of panels has unique advantages and limitations and it’s better to know a brief knowledge about each one of them. First, take a look at the most common type of panel which is the IPS type.
IPS or In-Plane Switching is one of the best and the most common panel type that many monitors and smartphones use. You can easily find whether a panel is an IPS model with better viewing angles and production of good colours as the IPS panels do offers the best viewing angles, most accurate colour production along great contrast ratios. On the other hand IPS panels limits to a response time of 4 milliseconds, and sticks to 60 Hertz refresh rates most of the times. But even monitors with IPS panels have refresh rates of 144Hz but they cost even more when comparing to other monitors with different types of panels that have the same refresh rate.
TN or Twisted Nematic panels are quite the opposite of IPS type panels when comparing the performances. TN panels are the cheapest and offer the highest refresh rates with lower response times. According to the results, TN panels have 1 millisecond response times which is great for high-speed gaming. Due to these reasons, most of the 144Hz and 240Hz monitors use TN panels to offer these much higher refresh rates. Furthermore, the colours are washed out due to the poor colour reproduction and the viewing angles are more horrible when comparing to the IPS panels. However, the gamers can’t refuse the high performances that are offered from these panels which perform well in competitive multiplayer gaming.
Verticle Alignment(VA) panels can be described as a compromise of both IPS and TN monitors as the overall performance is at an average level and maybe the best choice for the users who value both performances and colours of their display. When comparing with IPS panels, the VA panels offer closer colour accuracy and viewing angles and even better contrast ratios. It even produces fewer response times than an IPS panel but still, the TN panels are the leading type of panels over the list. As the drawbacks, ghosting and backlight bleeding can be defined which are not better if you are willing to buy a VA type monitor for gaming.
IPS vs TN vs VA: Which should You Choose?
When picking up a monitor, you do need to make a choice between two things, higher refresh rates or response times?
For those guys who don’t know what is the refresh rate, it is the number of times that it refreshes within one second and gets measured by hertz. As long as you are willing to play a game with more than 60 FPS(which is the typical number of frames of most of the monitors) you do need to make sure that your monitor has a compatible refresh rate or else you will only get the maximum frames that are allowed by the monitor. As an extra tip, it always better to reach the maximum level of 144Hz because it’s quite useless to buy 240Hz monitors because of these two reasons.
1.) Monitors with 240Hz refresh rates are more expensive and you need to have a super-powerful graphics card to push a higher number of frames to the screen.
2.) The difference between 144Hz and 240Hz is not that much noticeable for humans so having ultimate gameplay with 144hz is possible rather than going for a 240Hz monitor.
The response time is the factor that decides how much time does it takes to change the colour of one pixel either from black to white or from one colour to another. The fewer response times you have on your monitor will decide how smooth your gameplay. Although low refresh rates don’t hurt that much high response times can cause huge issues especially in gaming because you don’t want to see the action happening on your monitor after one hour after it happens inside your game.
Response times from 1-4 milliseconds is quite decent for gaming and you won’t notice the difference between 1 millisecond and 4 millisecond response times unless you have used a monitor with low response times for a long duration.
If you wish to get more frames coming to your monitor, it’s better to go for a monitor with TN panels but if you are a graphic designer or a person who engages in creative stuff, it’s 100% better to buy a monitor with IPS panels to get the best output from your creations and stuff. It’s always useful if you can test the monitor that you are going to buy before purchasing it to verify that it can give the output you want to get or else the whole amount of money you are spending will be a waste dump.
